How to create a hyperlink

Putting a PoppyDog tool into your web page just requires that you create a hyperlink to it on one of your web pages using the URL that we provide. If you have already created more than one web page for your web site, then you must have created a hyperlink already in order to jump from one page to another so you probably know what do. But 'what is a hyperlink?' we hear some of you ask!

What is a hyperlink?

A hyperlink is something in a web page that when you click on it, a new web page appears in your browser. The most simple form of a hyperlink is what PoppyDog calls a Text Hyperlink. This is basically some text which is usually underlined, an example is

PoppyDog Home    - a Text Hyperlink

If you click on the link above you will be taken to the PoppyDog home page. It is also possible to have an image as a hyperlink. This is what PoppyDog calls an Image Hyperlink. An example is given below

   - an Image Hyperlink
If you click on the image above, again you will be taken to the PoppyDog home page

So basically to put one of our tools into your web site, you need to create a Text Hyperlink or an Image Hyperlink. You can create either, its totally up to you! Sometimes we may provide some images that you might like to use for an Image Hyperlink.

What is a URL?

URL stands for Universal Resource Locator. What a mouthful! Basically a URL is a unique address for a particular resource on the internet. The resource may be a web page, an image, a PDF file, an MP3 file and so on. Actually the URL of a web page is usually displayed in the browser address bar. You can think of a URL as something that tells computers where a web page or image etc is on the internet.

What you are trying to achieve

Let say you have just signed up for the Password Protector tool. The aim is to have something like the following on one or more of your web pages:

When a visitor clinks on either the Text Hyperlink or the Image Hyperlink (depending on which one you use on your web page) your Password Protector Tool starts and the user is taken to the Password Protector login page.

A walk through example

On the Password Protector control panel there is button labeled 'Hyperlink URL'. You will find this button on the control panel of virtually all our tools so for all our tools the following procedure is the same. When you click on this 'Hyperlink URL' button, a page appears similar to the following:

This page gives you all the information you need to create either a Text Hyperlink or an Image Hyperlink. We will now show you how to create a Text Hyperlink and an Image Hyperlink using this information. We will show you how to do it using screenshots taken from a web page editor by Microsoft called Frontpage. There are many different web page editors on the market, examples are Frontpage, Dreamweaver, Homepage and GeoCities Powerbuilder. They obviously all work differently, but somewhere, somehow you will be able to create a hyperlink on your web page and you will probably find that you can create a Hyperlink in a similar fashion to the way we will do it. Therefore you should be able to follow the instructions that we give and apply them to your editor. Where necessary we will point out where editors might differ.
